Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth.

In a metaphorical sense and for the sake of this study in Colossians, tides are the rising and falling of our society caused by the combined effects of forces exerted by the Darkness and the Light and our society’s directional pull.
